Determination of Minimum Non-Propagation Distance between Segments of 105-mm M1 Projectile Composition B Riser Scrap.

Abstract

A series of tests were implemented with 105-mm M1 Projectile Explosive Composition B riser scrap to establish the minimum non-progation distances for four LAP (Load-Assemble-Pack) configurations to be used at the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant, Texas. The test results indicate that the minimum non-propagation distances are 45.7 centimeters (18 inches) and 91.4 centimeters (36 inches) respectively, for configurations of two and four Composition B scrap risers without funnels, and 61 centimeters (24 inches) and 91.4 centimeters (36 inches), respectively, for configurations of two and four Composition B scrap risers with shielded funnels. Composition B scrap risers were placed on a conveyor in configurations previously mentioned simulating conditions for a conveyor system to be designed for the LAP facilities at the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant in Texarkana, Texas.
