Nitroform Recovery and Isolation Studies.

Abstract

An investigation was made to effectively remove tetranitromethane (TNM) from the effluent gas stream from trinitrotoluene (TNT) manufacturing operations and convert it to nitroform (NF). The TNM was efficiently removed by passing the gas through a column scrubber containing an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate (Na3CO3) and stabilized hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The resulting sodium nitroform (SNF) solution can be vacuum distilled to obtain NF which is a marketable by-product. (Author)
