Monte Carlo Simulation of Negative Ion Collection by a Rocket-Borne Mass Spectrometer

Abstract

The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method developed for the prediction of positive ion collection by a rocket-borne probe has been extended to simulate negative ion effects. Major program modifications were necessary to properly describe the electron motion. In order to verify that the charged particle interactions were computed correctly a series of numerical experiments were performed. The results of these calculations indicate that both the electron and ion mobilities are simulated properly in the presence of an applied electric field.
