Nucleation and Growth of TNT Containing HNS,

Abstract

The nucleation and growth of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) by the addition of 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrostilbene (HNS) has been investigated by hot-stage microscopy. It is proposed that the effective nucleant is not the originally added HNS but an associated complex of HNS and TNT. The complex is formed during the thermal cycling of its individual components. Its exceptional nucleating efficiency is discussed and the resultant TNT crystal growth is described. (Author)
