Effects of Extensional Flow on Polystyrene in Dilute Solutions.

Abstract

Dilute solutions (0.025 to 0.05 wt.%) of polystyrene in toluene were placed in an extensional flow field. The molecular weight distribution of the polymer was studied before and after being placed in the flow field by gel permeation chromatography. Monodispersed polystyrene showed no change in molecular weight distribution after passing through the flow field. These results are contrary to those of P. Leopairat (MIT) PhD Thesis; 1977). It is suggested that the degradation Leopairat observed was due to an artifact in the apparatus he used. (Author)
