A User's Guide for the RITA Production Rule System.

Abstract

Interactive computer systems have traditionally communicated with the sophisticated computer user through a precise computer language. That language involved numerous control structures. Hardware costs and technology trends have excited a new breed of computer user. They, however, have lacked the sophistication and technical background to use most of the currently designed computer systems. In an attempt to meet the needs of the new breed of computer-naive user, The Rand Corporation has developed the Rule-directed Interactive Transaction Agent (RITA) system. RITA has used production systems and an English-like grammar to simplify program control structures and to communicate with the computer-naive user in a language of familiarity. A tutorial document has been developed to support the computer-naive user in using the RITA system. (Author)
