Development of Pyrolytic Graphite/Silicon Carbide Composite Materials for Rocket-Nozzle Applications. Volume 3. Comparison of Deposition Furnaces and a Generic Process Control System Specification

Abstract

This is the final volume in a three volume set describing the pyrolytic graphite/silicon carbide (PG/SiC) coating development work at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). In this volume we compare the injector deposition furnace with the channel flow furnace that was developed at LASL during this program. They are compared for ease of scaling to larger sizes and modeling with existing computer programs, and relative ease of implementing changes. A specification is given for a generic process control system for the PG/SiC deposition. A recommended step-by-step procedure to develop a coating furnace for a specified rocket-nozzle part is outlined and an example of its use is given.
