Development of Standard Methods of Testing and Analyzing Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Data

Abstract

Results are presented which provide the basis for the development of an ASTM standard for generating, analyzing and presenting fatigue crack growth rate data. Comprehensive data were also obtained on the individual and combined effects of load ratio, cyclic frequency, test temperature and environment on fatigue crack growth rates in a 10Ni steel and a 2219-T851 aluminum alloy. These data are used to demonstrate the utility of the proposed test methods. A new mathematical representation of wide-range fatigue crack growth rate data is also proposed which has advantages over existing representations.
