The Primary Energy Release in Reconnection Flare Models.

Abstract

A brief review is given on the primary energy release associated with reconnection flare models. In particular will be examined how the most recent flare models of Spicer and Uchida and Sakurai have attempted to overcome the standard difficulties with reconnection, i.e., the rate of reconnection and subsequent energy release. In addition comments are made on whether the primary flare instability is explosive or non-explosive.
