Comparison of Pre-Shot Response Predictions with AVCO Reverse Ballistic Tests of Half-Scale Penetrators

Abstract

This report compares eight theoretical pre-shot predictions with the results of two reverse ballistic tests performed by AVCO in the late summer of 1976. The test setup and the tests are described. Each of the theoretical approaches (which used many different modeling techniques, from simple wave transmission to complex finite elements) is discussed and evaluated. The report concludes that the theoretical predictions were consistent and quite accurate. The agreement with the experimental results is generally excellent whenever the latter results are sufficiently redundant and self-consistent to be credible.
