Determination of Microscopic Atomic Structure of Surfaces and Overlayers which are Important in Heterogeneous Catalysis.

Abstract

This report describes the research efforts in five different areas, all related to a better understanding of solid surfaces: (1) The analysis of surface structures by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED); (2) Other research related to LEED such as an improved method of measuring experimentally the angle of incidence of the electron beam in a LEED apparatus; (3) An examination of desorption phenomena including a theoretical treatment of thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDS); (4) Model calculations concerning the dependence of the spectral intensity upon adsorbate concentration in inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS); and (5) Chemisorption and surface reactions.
