The Deep Scattering Layer.
Abstract
The MGS Survey includes reverberation measurements of the deep scattering layer for the purpose of obtaining reverberation coefficients applicable to the SQS-26. The gathered data is reduced by methods outlined in reference 1. This discussion is the result of studying numerous reports followed by an analysis of one of the long standing assumptions upon which the reverberation coefficient is based; the scatterers begin reverberation when insonified and stop immediately when 'in the dark'. In questioning this assumption, two points were investigated; (1) the interchangeability of explosive and cw measurements, and (2) the increased back scatter at night from the deep scattering layer.
