Theoretical Analysis of Swing-Pad Bearings with Small Imperfections.

Abstract

A theoretical study was made of swing-pad bearings with small imperfections. The main conclusions are: (1) bearing performance will depend greatly on the imperfections in the bearings; swing-pad bearings may have to be manufactured to very small tolerances to be reliable; (2) swing-pad bearings are not significantly better than tilt-pad bearings under moderate load conditions; and (3) under severe conditions in which the bearing pads frequently contact the moving surface, the swing-pad bearing will perform better than a tilt-pad bearing. Agreement between theory and experiment is only qualitative at best, so these conclusions cannot be considered final. (Author)
