Low-Altitude Expansions of Geodetic Kernels.

Abstract

The three important kernels of Physical Geodesy (Stokes', Poisson's, and the Coating kernel) are first considered in their traditional forms (closed-form analytic and Legendre polynomial expansion) and then given in new forms (expansions in powers of the altitude divided by the earth's radius). Useful results concerning these expansions are then given and their domain of applicability is determined. Finally, the accuracy and implementation of these low-altitude expansions is discussed.
