TARTARUS IV N/COCO War Gamer's Manual (TARTARUS Manual) Revision,

Abstract

This manual documents information pertaining to the TARTARUS IV N/COCO War Game, a computer assisted war game for operations research. The manual's scope is limited to actions, procedures, model logic and sufficient background information for the war gamer to utilize the simulation; it does not provide model documentation. TARTARUS IV is a deterministic model that simulates the ground combat of large opposing forces with aggregation at brigade or division level. The simulation requires the interaction of gamers as tactical decisionmakers for the employment of the forces. The model is driven by the forces' weapons' firepower potential and can simulate the effects of terrain and obstacles upon unit movement, and the effects of movement and incoming fires (Suppression) on the unit's ability to fire. The model has a coordinate conversion ('COCO') routine that provides for unit arrays on geographic (UTM) coordinates. The model functions with routines contained in an input processor, differential model and output processor. The output processor generates reports of personnel and equipment losses, ammunition expenditures and data for the graphic display of the battlefield to a map scale. (Author)
