Draftees: Disqualifications for Military Service for Medical Reasons-an Analysis of Trends Over Time

Abstract

The report traces the leading medical diagnoses that have been responsible for a recent pronounced increase in the medical disqualification rates of draftees examined for military service. It also examines the standards for these diagnoses, as well as any changes that have occurred in these standards or in their application, and proposes certain modifications in these standards. It is recommended that serious consideration be given to a general reassessment of the existing medical standards, which are basically 'combat oriented;' such reassessment seems to be particularly desirable in view of an impending zero-draft.
