Abstract

This document represents the proceedings of a symposium sponsored jointly by the Office of Naval Research and the Committee on Undersea Warfare of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council and held February 29 - March 1, 1957. Participants were drawn from various United States and foreign laboratories and the 25 papers presented deal with physical and chemical oceanographic problems relating to the deep sea. Also included are discussions of the papers and a summary of the symposium which draws attention to a number of factors important in more fully opening up the deep regions of the sea to scientific study.
