The Determination of Cellulose Crystallinity.

Abstract

This report describes the initial phase of a study to determine the cause of button formation during nitration of sulfate pulp. Three possible causes are presented: (1) Xyland and mannan content; (2) Cellulose II content; and, (3) Amorphous cellulose. A method is described to measure the cellulose crystallinity or conversely the amorphous content. Recommendations are made to revise procurement specifications for wood pulp to minimize xylan and mannan content, to investigate the effect of Cellulose II upon nitration, and to study the effect crystallinity has upon nitration.
