Communication Warfare.

Abstract

The fundamental principles of modern communication warfare are examined. The effectiveness of various types of jamming against amplitude-modulation, phase-modulation, frequency-modulation, and frequency-shift keyed systems is analyzed and assessed. The optimal pulse duration for the pulse jamming of digital communications is determined. Cryptographic digital communication is reviewed. The potential susceptibility of the associated synchronization system to pulsed jamming is considered. Spread-spectrum systems, which conceal the existence of transmissions and resist jamming, are discussed. An example of an adaptive antenna system is analyzed. The main features of optical communication are briefly summarized. (Author)
