Technical Risk Assessment of Extended Configurations of the M113A1E1

Abstract

This study assesses the technical risk associated with development and employment of a stretched M113A1E1 vehicle (SM113) in the IFV/CFV role. The analysis is limited to technical risk, thus excluding other types of program risks such as those associated with cost and schedule. The analysis addresses the SM113 in various configurations and in most cases makes comparison to the M113A1 and to the M113A1E1 (not extended). Primary concern is for the effects of weight growth, and specific attention is given to the cooling system, engine, transmission, final drive, suspension, track, hull and weapons station.
