Standardizing the Evaluation of Candidate Materials for High L/D Penetrators

Abstract

A procedure using penetration performance criteria for characterizing and evaluating the potential of candidate materials for use as kinetic energy penetrators has been developed. A preliminary quick method for screening candidate penetrator materials, the up-down V sub 50 ballistic limit test and a more complete method of evaluation, the x-ray diagnostic procedure, are described.
