Analysis and Calculations of Lightning Interactions with Aircraft Electrical Circuits.

Abstract

This report documents the results of a study performed to evaluate the indirect effects of lightning strikes - specifically, induced voltages - on the electrical systems of aircraft. Numerical methods for evaluating the fields produced by lightning currents flowing the skin of the aircraft are presented as a first analytical step. Additional numerical methods, for computing the voltages induced in wiring systems by the fields evaluated in the first step, are also presented, as are recommendations on the direction of further study.
