Warship Efficiency in a Changing Environment.

Abstract

In the course of the last few years the main attributes of the conscripted sailors summoned to serve their compulsory time in the Royal Norwegian Navy have changed substantially, especially regarding level of education and attitudes toward formal authority. Similar developments have taken place in the Norwegian society at large during this period while the mission of the Navy has remained approximately the same. This study describes and discusses various approaches a commanding officer of the frigate in the RNoN could choose to establish an effective unit under present individual and societal circumstances; the difficulties he is likely to experience and decisions he has to make, when attempting to adjust traditional patterns of leadership philosophy and style to match current challenges.
