Calculation of Low Frequency Cavitation Source Strength of Marine Propellers.

Abstract

This memorandum documents recent improvements to a model for the prediction of volume-time histories for sheet cavitation on the blades of merchant ship propellers, and the low frequency acoustic radiation resulting from these sheet cavitation volume fluctuations. This model is part of a larger effort directed at predicting the statistics of ocean ambient noise due to merchant shipping. A description of the mechanics of sheet cavitation on propeller blades and the acoustic radiation resulting from fluctuations in sheet cavitation volume is given in an earlier report, BBN Tech Memo No. 319, and will not be repeated here.
