Research on Learning Strategies and Hands-on Training in CAI

Abstract

This if the Final Report for Contract N00014-75-C-0838, covering a period of three and three-quarter years from January 1975 to September 1978. Research was performed in two major areas: instructional theory and development of a generalized maintenance trainer-simulator. The domain of instructional theory included five related research projects. These were the effects of visual analogies of abstract concepts, Markov decision models for instructional sequence optimization, electrophysiological correlates of cognitive processing, cognitive strategies for text processing, and heuristic techniques for logical problem solution. The work on the development of the maintenance trainer- simulator included tests of the system in Navy School environments and led to a project to further develop the system for regular use in Navy schools. In addition to producing instructional systems which are now being developed for use in Navy schools, this contract produced fourteen technical reports, seven chapters in books or articles in journals, and nine papers for professional meetings.
