Pressure Stabilized Beam Finite Element

Abstract

The development of a finite element for a pressure stabilized beam is presented and its adaptation to a computer code for the nonlinear structural analysis of frame-supported tents is described. The finite element is based on theory developed in earlier work and includes transverse shear and differential stiffness effects. Third order polynomials are used to represent the transverse displacements and bending rotations. First order polynomials are used to represent the axial and torsional deformation. A condensation is carried out to reduce the number of generalized coordinates to twelve. Two check cases are presented to establish the accuracy of the finite element.
