Dead Band Controls Guide.

Abstract

The purpose of this guide is to show methods of reducing energy consumption in new and existing heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems by using the Dead Band control strategy. Dead Band control strategy and its application to HVAC SYSTEMS IS DISCUSSED FOR THREE REPRESENTATIVE CLIMATIC ZONES IN THE CONTINENTAL United States. Computer modeling techniques provide predictions on energy savings due to control system modifications for six types of HVAC systems and two types of building construction, thermally heavy and thermally light. The operation of six HVAC systems is described and illustrated for existing and Dead Band control strategy. Computer simulation of these various systems demonstrates that substantial energy savings can be achieved by employing Dead Band control strategy. Bar graphs are provided illustrating relative energy used for each HVAC system. Engineering guidelines for the design of Dead Band control systems are presented in form of control schematics and logic diagrams for each HVAC system. Economic guidelines include techniques for estimating construction and maintenance cost, and performing economic analysis for each system. (Author)
