Chemical and Physical Aspects of Mesophase Formation during Carbon-Carbon Processing.

Abstract

Equipment designed around the use of a laboratory Instron test machine is described for making high pressure measurements of sound velocity and viscosity at elevated temperature. Sound velocity measurements were made in phenanthrene at temperatures between 393K and 562K and pressures between 0.1 and 101 MPa. A linear relation between the cube of sound velocity and pressure was observed. Velocity measurements were also made in coal tar pitch in the same temperature range at 0.1 MPa. (Author)
