A Human Engineering Specification for Legibility of Alphanumeric Symbology on Video Monitor Displays.

Abstract

Conventional human engineering specifications for display of alphanumeric symbology on video monitors consist of predictors of user performance derived from studies of display legibility. These predictors include CRT and matrix display symbol generation variables, CRT raster structure and phosphor variables, together with other variables such as symbol format and display surface anti-glare treatment. This report discusses a number of significant problems associated with the development and application of conventional human engineering display specifications and presents a detailed specification for comparative and objective evalaution of video monitor legibility performance based upon legibility tests developed for the USAF. This specification consists of criteria for subject selection, visual environment design, display monitor setup, test material design and presentation, legibility task scores, and legibility test performance.
