An Analysis of the Data Collection Modes of a Digital Weather Radar System with Respect to Significant Severe Weather Features.
Abstract
Dual wavelength digital weather radar data were collected at zero deg elevation angle in all four modes of collection possible with the Texas A and M University weather radar system (1 and 2 deg and 1 and 2 km modes). These data were processed and displayed as contoured maps of reflectivity. These maps were then analyzed, both qualitatively and quantitatively, in an effort to determine an optimum mode of collection with respect to retention of meteorological features and data processing resources required to produce the maps. The results indicated that significant differences exist between the reflectivity displays obtained from the different collection modes. Results from two of the modes are good, while the other two modes suffer from enough loss of detail and accuracy to make their usefulness questionable. Additionally, the Texas A and M University digital weather radar system and the two computer programs used to process the data were explained. (Author)
