Gaussian Jitter of a Focused Beam of Light.

Abstract

Random beam wander of the Fraunhoffer pattern of an annular beam of light of uniform irradiance and phase modeled by convolving that pattern and a circularly symmetric gaussian probability density function. By substituting the function exp((zeta)(rho sq)/(pi)(sigma sq)) for ((2 J sub 1) (PI RHO)/(pi rho)), an expression is obtained which, within 5 percent, approximates the central lobe of the effective jittered irradiance distribution. Graphs are presented of effective irradiance profile, of jittered encircled power as a function of circle radius, and of effective peak irradiance as a function of jitter. Annuli with area obscuration ratios of 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 are considered. (Author)
