Multifunction Keyboard Implementation Study.

Abstract

An aircraft which utilize digital computers will require the use of multifunction controls and displays. Four different multifunction keyboard configurations were examined by pilots flying a simulated mission. Two of the configurations were located on the left side of the front instrument panel, while the remaining two were located on the right side console and/or the right side of the front instrument panel. The pilots performed communications, navigation and stores tasks using each configuration. The configurations also utilized two different types of hardware: projection switches and cathode ray tubes.
