The Monopulse Performance of an Optical Heterodyne Detector with Varying LO Distributions

Abstract

Calculations are performed to determine the monopulse characteristics, the signal-to-noise ratio, efficiency, and the transmit-receive pattern of an optical heterodyne detector composed of four quadrants. The variation of these quantities for a varying receive beam size on the detector, and a uniform LO, and Gaussian and Airy LO distributions of varying size are tabulated. The calculations are applied to determine the possibility of increasing the angular coverage of an optical heterodyne receiver.
