Improvement of Shock Measurements for Armored Vehicles - ILIR Task 4.

Abstract

A study was conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground from April to September 1978. Data from piezoelectric and piezoresistive accelerometers subjected to short duration shocks were analyzed. Various configurations and materials were used to mechanically filter out high-frequency acceleration. Electrical filtering of the accelerometer signal before recording was preferable to the soft mounts made for this project, because the electrical filters had much more damping. Newly introduced, commercially fabricated soft mounts have been ordered and will be tested when they are received. For short-duration shocks the best measurements were obtained with piezoresistive (strain-gage) type accelerometers with filtering. The worst measurements were obtained with piezoelectric (Crystal) type accelerometers and no filtering. The most reasonable interpretation was obtained by comparing velocity changes (Integral of the acceleration). The worst interpretation was obtained by comparing peak accelerations.
