Ring Laser Gyro Mirror Substrate Investigation.

Abstract

This report discusses methods for the fabrication and characterization of multilayer dielectric mirrors using single crystal garnet substrates. Polishing of garnet substrates to the required flatness for laser mirrors is described. The results of adhesion testing of SiO2/TiO2 multilayer dielectric high reflectance coatings on garnets are discussed. Lastly, the reuslts of characterization of the mirrors by scattering measurements and lock-band measurements are described as well as correlation of these two evaluation tools with regard to prediction of mirror performance in a ring laser. Emphasis is on the experimental aspects of the work.
