TRESI, An Automatic Active Target Classification System,

Abstract

An active sonar target classification system is described which extracts automatically a set of classification clues from the audio and video outputs of a sonar set such as the AN/SQS-23 and presents these to a Clue Evaluator which renders a classification decision according to information stored within its memory. The stored information is obtained adaptively from quantities of sonar contacts of known classification from which estimates of the joint probability densities of sonar classification clues are obtained for both submarine and non-submarine contacts. Principles of operation, hardware features, and preliminary performance characteristics of the TRESI classification system are described.
