Development of an Inflatable Head/Neck Restraint System for Ejection Seats (Update)

Abstract

A ring-shaped inflatable head/neck restraint system for ejection seats is being developed at the Aircraft and Crew Systems Technology Directorate, NADC. The purpose of this system is to reduce neck injuries due to violent forward head rotation at the time of ejection thrust an parachute opening shock. Inflation of the neck ring will be conducted by a solid propellant gas generator. Design considerations include form-an-fit, cost effectiveness, packaging and integration into life support equipment.
