Evaluation of Liquid-Gas Separator Materials for a Silver Zinc Cell Vent

Abstract

The gas permeability of TFE Teflon, FEP Teflon, polyethylene, and microporous Teflon was measured in order to evaluate the suitability of these materials for use as liquid-gas separators for silver zinc cell vents. Microporous Teflon was found to have ideal characteristics for a liquid-gas separator. This material has a high gas permeability, it is not wetted by electrolyte, and it has a negligible permeability to KOH electrolyte. Microporous Teflon is recommended as the material of choice for liquid-gas separators in silver zinc battery cells.
