Optimum Launch Vehicle Sizing.

Abstract

A FORTRAN program that computes the optimum sizing parameters of a multi-stage rocket in powered ascent has been developed. The computer program is based upon an optimization procedure, due to Ruppe, which maximized the payload weight to total launch vehicle weight. Based upon a simplified aerodynamic model, the optimization procedure is convenient to use and provides useful approximate values of launch vehicle sizing parameters for launch vehicle of n stages, where n = 0, 1, 2... A numerical example is given to illustrate the utility of the FORTRAN program. (Author)
