Vector Operations in a Dipole Coordinate System

Abstract

For many physical systems, especially those in the earth's magnetosphere or in solar flares, the major component of the plasma motion is along the magnetic field which is approximately dipolar. For such systems, resolving the flow into dipole coordinates is often beneficial. This report presents a list of the most common mathematical formulas and operations used in the application of a dipole coordinate system.
