A Guide to the Usage of Power Spectrum Calculations According to the Methods of Tukey.

Abstract

Formulae for the calculation of the estimated power spectrum and its variance from the true value for a stationary, random process given a finite record, have been given by Tukey. These methods have been applied by the author to determine the power spectra of temperature records. Since the IBM 650 computation programs for the evaluation of these quantities may be generally useful, they will be described in detail. The mathematical background will be developed, and some of the different notations encountered in the extensive literature in this subject will be pointed out.
