Chinese Fish Culture, Natural Breeding,

Abstract

Cultural fish species in China, such as the grass carp, white bighead, striped bighead, black Chinese roach, and Cirrhina molitorella breed only in flowing water in rivers. After fertilization, the eggs drift downstream gradually developing along the way. Carp and goldfish spawn in either flowing or still water, but the eggs adhere to vegetation until hatched. Black Chinese roach and striped bighead spawning grounds are distributed in the Yangtze, Pearl and Hwau Rivers, but are not found in northern or central China. In addition to the above rivers, grass carp and white bighead spawning grounds are also found in Chekiang and Manchuria. Chirrhina molitorella spawning grounds are confined to southern China. Goldfish and carp can breed almost anywhere.
