Preliminary Investigation of Integrated Bluff Protective Systems for Lake Erie.

Abstract

The Lake Erie shoreline in Lake County is receding from one to five feet per year. There are no organized efforts to halt the recession and individual protection efforts have been mostly ineffective. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the physical mechanisms that cause recession, to develop a feasible preliminary integrated design system, and to develop design information using current analytical techniques. The conclusions are: Recession is caused by wave action and slope instability; individuals are not properly equipped to protect their own shoreline; and the integrated approach is feasible, though difficult to implement.
