Instabilities in a Magnetized Beam-Plasma System.

Abstract

A review of the existing theory on instabilities in a magnetized beam-plasma system is presented with emphasis on the unstable electromagnetic waves in the frequency range between ion cyclotron frequency and the electron cyclotron frequency. The strengths and weaknesses of the various theoretical models are discussed and it is pointed out in which direction future work should proceed. Both the unbounded and radially bounded problems are considered, using both a quasistatic treatment and a fully electromagnetic treatment. Plots of the dispersion curves and a table of the quasistatic growth rates for four of the instabilities are given for reference. (Author)
