Impact of Dam and Lake Construction on Rural Economies.

Abstract

This report is an assessment of the social and economic impact of five dam and lake projects constructed by the Corps of Engineers. Four of the lake projects are located in Kansas, and one in Missouri. Factors used to examine the impact were land use, population, employment, and taxes. The study area includes project counties, or counties containing the dam and all or part of lake; and control counties, or counties which reflect the prevailing social and economic conditions and trends in the rural areas of northeastern and southwestern Missouri. The time frame is focused on three distinct phases of project land acquisition and development.
