Studies of Walrus and Whales.

Abstract

A preliminary report is made of the results obtained on a marine mammal expedition aboard the USCGC Icebreaker Glacier in the Chukchi Sea in July 1977. Observations on hauling-out rhythms, radio tagging, underwater vocalizations, on-ice behavior and herd structure of walruses are presented. A variety of student projects, including transmission of trichinosis, benthic and water column sampling, walrus feces composition, and bird copraphagy are summarized. (Author)
