Rocket Measurements of Auroral Electron Density Irregularities in Support of the Defense Nuclear Agency Wideband Satellite.

Abstract

In situ measurements of electron density irregularities in the auroral E and F regions were conducted in support of the DNA Wideband satellite. The results from the two rocket probes that were flown in conjunction with nighttime overpasses of the satellite are reported in detail. Significant regions of irregular plasma density fluctuations were detected on both flights, but with somewhat different character and over different spatial regions. The spectra of the irregularities indicate that they are formed by different mechanisms than those observed in both spread F and in barium clouds. (Author)
