Peer Rating Research: Annotated Bibliography.
Abstract
This report is an annotated bibliography of peer rating research. Personnel, industrial, and social psychology journals and technical reports were reviewed to identify studies employing peer ratings, and annotations of these studies were prepared. In our view, the most noteworthy findings from this literature are the following: (1) Peer ratings on personality traits consistently yield similar factor structures, suggesting that the dimensionality of these ratings may refelect raters' commonly held beliefs about personality. (2) Peer ratings typically show high interrater agreement, especially when the stability of these ratings is enhanced by gathering evaluations from many peers. (3) Peer ratings often correlate only moderately with ratings from other sources (e.g., supervisors). Presumably, such disagreements in ratings arise because members of different organizational levels have different perspectives on what it takes to perform effectively, and these groups typically view different samples of ratees' performance-related behavior. (4) Peer ratings often provide good predictions of subsequent performance in training or on jobs. This result has been most consistently obtained in military settings, but peer ratings in industry have also proven to be good indicators of future performance. Such successses have been attributed to peers' comparatively good opportunity to observe ratee behaviour relevant to assessing perofrmance effectiveness. (Author)
