Skimming Stories in Real Time: An Experiment in Integrated Understanding,

Abstract

This dissertation describes a new method of automated text analysis. FRUMP (Fast Reading Understanding and Memory Program) is a working natural language processing system that has been implemented to demonstrate the viability of this new approach. The system skims news stories directly from the United Press International news wire and produces a summary of what it understands. FRUMP is able to correctly process news articles it has never before seen. (Author)
