An Investigation of the Ignition Delay Times for Propylene Oxide-Oxygen-Nitrogen Mixtures.

Abstract

A reflected shock tube technique has been used to measure the ignition delay time for propylene oxide-oxygen-nitrogen mixtures in the temperature range of 900 to 1250 deg K. Ignition delay times were measured by using both streak schlieren and pressure gauges mounted on the back wall of the shock tube. A regression analysis indicated that the delay time multiplied by the propylene oxide concentration to the .8 power and the oxygen concentration to the -1.2 power yielded a best fit when plotted as a logarithm against the reciprocal temperature. This regression analysis also indicated that the nitrogen concentration had no effect on the ignition delay time. The apparent activation energy for the reaction was found to be approximately 19 kcal joule/mole.
